Forestry Commission Scotland has now opened a new all-abilities trail in Kilmichael Forest, offering access to stunning scenery and Kilmartin Glen’s famous ‘cup and ring’ marked stones.

Steve Williams for the Forestry Commission, describes the easy trail as ‘around 400 metres in length with a zig-zag section leading to a viewing board and interpretation panel giving information about the area’s archaeology.

There are numerous resting points along the way for anyone to stop, relax and simply enjoy the views’.

Donald MacDougall of Forestry Commission Scotland’s West Argyll team managed the project. He says of it: ‘The new all-abilities route is part of the popular Yellow Trail and aims to encourage all visitors of any ability to enjoy the forest.

‘From the car park, it takes about 10 minutes to walk to the viewing boards where a Prehistoric art gallery, featuring carved cup and ring rock symbols can be seen. These carvings were created over 4,000 years ago and are really interesting to look at.

‘There are also panoramic views of the surrounding countryside down to Loch Fyne and the hills on the Isle of Arran can be seen on a clear day.’

The easy access parking bay can be found about 800metres from the main car park at Achnabreac.

Forestry Commission Scotland employed local contractors to build the trail which took around four weeks to create – and worked with Historic Scotland to help combine the new trail with the surrounding archaeology.
